Some are saying use a small pipe. The hay sweetness is very prominent. But these small batch blends have all been outstanding and CRF is another great one in this series. Dark, rich and the sweetness builds as the bowl progresses. The bottom line: this blend has catapulted itself into one my top 5 blends. Th is medium-strength, medium-flavored blend hit the mark like other C&D small-batch offerings. It does have some of the cranberry with sourdough bread , spice and vinegar . The 2022 edition of Carolina Red Flake features matured TA-20 Red-Orange Tips (the same grade as in 2021's Carolina Red Flake with Perique), boasting a substantial natural sugar content of 13.53%, and all sourced from a single family farm in North Carolina. Its an interesting blend. This is a tobacco tin worth waiting for and worth it's money X10. Smokes great and tastes great, what more can you ask for (aside from more availability LOL). The first third of the bowl is impressive. It is much stronger than a mild, 2000 batch of aged McCrannie's Red Ribbon which didn't impress me all that much due to it's mild nature & lack of strength almost like plain air but it did possess a good flavor. It is not an overly complex smoke but it is not without nuance. They produce an abundance of mildly tart and very tangy ripe citrus, sugar, bread, grass, some tangy ripe dark fruit, earth, wood, floralness, vegetation, mild sour lemon, light spice, and small touches of vinegar and acidity. Burns at a moderate pace, cool and clean with no dull or harsh spots. Burns cool and clean at a slightly slow pace with a very consistent, smoother than expected, deep fruity, sugary, mildly sour, light sparkly flavor that extends to the lightly lingering, pleasant after taste. If you enjoy red Virginia's and can find some at a decent price, this is a must try plus it will age wonderfully!! I suppose this is not monopol tobacco, all from one plot, rather I think its two or more similar but not the same red VAs, because there is a wonderful, very sophisticated complexity available for the seeker of this sort of thing, even as these tobaccos meld very well. Delightful, easy-smoking, good flavor and room notes. One medium or even a smaller bowl would be enough to sa tisfy the Vitamin N necessity of any piper.
